Keep Charms on a Bracelet

Shortly after my wedding 30 years ago, I went on a road trip with my husband. We started in New York City and drove across the entire country to San Francisco. There, at a tiny souvenir shop, my husband found a bracelet charm in the shape of the Golden Gate Bridge. When I saw this cute little charm, I thought it would be a great souvenir to remember the trip, so I bought it to hang on my silver bracelet. This turned out to be the beginning of a lifelong tradition.
After a few months, my husband and I got a chance to travel to Moscow. There, we happened to find a tiny St. Basil’s Cathedral charm and it reminded me of the first charm from San Francisco. Without a moment’s hesitation, we bought it to add to the bracelet. Since then, we have managed to find the perfect charm on every trip. We now have nearly 20 different charms―one from each trip. We have a Taj Mahal charm from India, a Parthenon charm from Greece, and even an elephant charm from Kenya. As my children grew up, they helped choose some of the charms, so our whole family can look back at every trip we’ve taken together.

30년 전 제 결혼 직후, 저는 남편과 함께 자동차 여행을 떠났어요. 뉴욕에서 시작해 미국을 가로질러 샌프란시스코까지 운전했죠. 샌프란시스코에서 작은 기념품 가게를 발견했는데, 남편이 골든게이트 브리지 모양의 작은 참(장식품)을 찾았어요. 이 귀여운 참을 보자마자 이 여행을 기억할 좋은 기념품이 될 것 같아 실버 팔찌에 걸려고 구입했어요. 이게 평생의 전통이 될 줄은 몰랐죠.
몇 달 후, 남편과 저는 모스크바로 여행을 가게 되었어요. 그곳에서 우연히 성 바실리 대성당 모양의 작은 참을 발견했고, 그게 샌프란시스코에서 산 첫 번째 참을 떠올리게 했어요. 망설임 없이 그 참을 사서 팔찌에 추가했어요. 그때부터 우리는 매번 여행을 갈 때마다 완벽한 참을 찾아왔어요. 지금은 거의 20개의 다양한 참이 있어요. 인도에서 가져온 타지마할 참, 그리스의 파르테논 참, 심지어 케냐의 코끼리 참도 있답니다. 제 아이들이 자라면서 그들도 참을 고르는 데 도움을 줬기 때문에 우리 가족 모두가 함께한 여행을 돌아볼 수 있게 되었어요.
