Make Friends and Keep in Touch

For me, the best souvenirs are new friends I make while traveling. Obviously, I can’t put the people in my suitcase to take them home, but while we’re together, I can have conversations and laugh with them. Sometimes I add them on social media or ask for their contact information so that I can stay in touch with them. Two years ago I made friends with an elderly couple from Japan I met at the Jeonju Hanok Village. While in the restroom, I happened upon a woman’s bag. Right away, I took it to a nearby police station. When I got there, I met an elderly couple who had come there looking for their lost bag. Happily, the woman was the owner of the bag that I had found, so I handed it to them. They were so thankful that they treated me to dinner, and we had a great time together. We still keep in touch, and last year they even visited my home in Gyeongju. For me, this proves that a good relationship is the best souvenir, because it can make the memories of a trip last for a long time.

저에게 최고의 기념품은 여행 중에 사귀는 새로운 친구들이에요. 물론 사람들을 내 가방에 넣어 집에 데려갈 수는 없지만, 함께 있는 동안 대화를 나누고 함께 웃을 수 있어요. 가끔은 그들을 소셜 미디어에 추가하거나 연락처를 받아서 계속 연락할 수 있도록 해요. 2년 전, 저는 전주 한옥마을에서 만난 일본의 한 노부부와 친구가 되었어요. 화장실에 갔을 때 우연히 한 여자의 가방을 발견했어요. 바로 근처 경찰서에 그 가방을 가져갔죠. 거기서 잃어버린 가방을 찾으러 온 한 노부부를 만났는데, 운 좋게도 그 여자가 제가 발견한 가방의 주인이었어요. 그래서 그들에게 가방을 돌려주었어요. 그들은 너무 고마워해서 저를 저녁 식사에 초대해 주었고, 우리는 함께 즐거운 시간을 보냈어요. 우리는 아직도 연락을 주고받고 있고, 작년에는 그들이 제 고향인 경주까지 방문했어요. 저에게 이것은 좋은 관계가 최고의 기념품이라는 것을 증명해요, 왜냐하면 그것이 여행의 기억을 오래도록 간직하게 해주기 때문이에요.
