❶ In a documentary film released in 2004, psycho-pharmacologist Candace Pert retells a story about the conquistadors and Montezuma.

❷ The story, a reportedly factual account, essentially states that when the Spanish galleons approached, they were invisible to the Aztec people.

❸ The reason was simply that the Aztec had never seen ships of that nature.

❹ When the Spanish approached the shore with their helmets on their heads, what the Aztec perceived were gods with golden helmets reflecting the sun as they walked on water.

❺ The Aztec welcomed them as gods, and of course everyone knows what happened.

❻ According to the story, it took several days of just staring at the water where the Spanish arrived for one of the Aztec scholars to finally see the ships.

❼ Arguably, this story illustrates how we fail to see what we see, either because of psychological defense strategies and/or the inability to see what is not already in the mind to see.

 

 

 

 

 

[ 보는 것을 알아보지 못하는 이유  ]

 

❶ 2004년에 개봉한 다큐멘터리 영화에서 정신 약리학자인 Candace Pert는 신대륙 정복자들과 Montezuma에 관한 이야기를 다시 말한다.

❷ 사실에 근거했다고 전해지는 말인 그 이야기는 본질적으로 스페인의 갈레온이 접근했을 때 그것들이 아즈텍 사람들에게는 보이지 않았다고 말한다.

❸ 그 이유는 단순히 아즈텍 사람들은 그런 종류의 배를 본 적이 없었기 때문이었다.

❹ 스페인 사람들이 머리에 투구를 쓰고 해안에 접근했을 때, 아즈텍 사람들이 인지한 것은 물 위를 걸을 때 햇빛을 반사하는 황금빛 투구를 쓴 신들이었다.

❺ 아즈텍 사람들은 그들을 신으로 맞이했고, 물론 모두가 무슨 일이 일어났는지 안다.

❻ 그 이야기에 따르면, 아즈텍 학자 중 한 명은 스페인 사람들이 도착한 물을 그저 응시하다가 며칠이 지나서야 마침내 그 배들을 보게 되었다.

❼ 주장하건대 이 이야기는 심리적 방어 전략 및/ 또는 보도록 이미 마음 속에 있지 않은 것을 보는 능력이 없기 때문에 우리가 어떻게 우리가 보는 것을 보지 못하게 되는지를 잘 설명해 준다.
