[ Human Curiosity at the root of mankind and civilization ]
❶ Curiosity is the essence of life.
❷ Animals including humans cannot live without knowing what is useful to them and what is needed for their survival: where to find food, how to avoid predators, where to find mates, etc.
❸ However, the human species differs from other animals because we thirst for knowledge that reaches far beyond our personal needs.
❹ We look around us and we wonder.
❺ We wonder about our surroundings and about what we observe both near and far and we want to understand it all. ❻ Indeed, we fear the unknown.
❼ This sense of wonder and desire for understanding not only makes us human, but is also one of the foundation stones of civilization.
[ 인간다움과 문명의 바탕이 된 인간의 호기심 ]
❶ 호기심은 생명체의 핵심적 특성이다.
❷ 인간을 포함한 동물들은 어디서 먹을 것을 찾아야 하는지, 어떻게 포식자를 피해야 하는지, 어디서 짝을 찾아야 하는지와 같은, 그들에게 유용한 것과 그들의 생존을 위해서 필요한 것을 모르고서는 살아갈 수 없다.
❸ 그러나 우리가 개인적인 욕구를 훨씬 넘어서는 지식을 갈망하기 때문에 인류는 다른 동물들과는 다르다.
❹ 우리는 주변을 둘러보고 궁금해한다.
❺ 우리는 우리 주변에 대해서 그리고 가까운 곳과 먼 곳에서 관찰하는 것에 대해서 궁금해하고 그것을 모두 이해하고 싶어한다.
❻ 실로, 우리는 미지의 것을 두려워한다.
❼ 이러한 궁금증과 이해하고 싶은 욕망은 우리를 인간답게 할 뿐 아니라 문명의 초석을 이루는 것 중 하나이다.
