[ Characteristics of Recycling -- Visibility of Behavior ]
❶ What distinguishes recycling is not its importance, but rather the ease with which individuals can participate, and the visibility of actions taken to promote the common good.
❷ You may care passionately about the threat of global warming or the destruction of the rain forests—but you can’t have an immediate effect on these problems that is perceptible to yourself or others.
❸ The rain forest salvation truck doesn’t make weekly pickups, let alone the clean air truck.
❹ When a public opinion poll in 1990 asked people what they had done in connection with environmental problems,
80 to 85% answered that they or their households had participated in various aspects of recycling;
no other significant steps had been taken by a majority of respondents.
❺ Like the drunk looking for his wallet under the lamppost, we may focus on recycling because it is where the immediate tasks are best illuminated.

❷ 여러분은 지구 온난화의 위협이나 열대우림의 파괴에 대해 열의에 찬 관심을 보일지도 모르지만,
이런 문제들에 대해 여러분 자신이나 다른 이들이 인지할 수 있는 즉각적인 영향을 끼치지 못한다.
❸ 공기 정화 트럭은 고사하고, 열대 우림 보호 트럭이 매주 수거하러 오지는 않는다.
❹ 1990년의 여론 조사가 사람들에게 그들이 환경 문제와 관련하여 무엇을 했는지를 물었을 때,
80~85퍼센트가 자신 혹은 자신의 가정 이 다양한 측면의 재활용에 참여했다고 답했지만,
응답자의 대부분에 의해서 그 외의 어떤 중대한 조치도 취해지지 않았다.
❺ 술에 취한 사람이 가로등 밑에서 자신의 지갑을 찾는 것처럼, 우리는 재활용이 즉각적인 과업이 가장 잘 드러나는 경우이기 때문에 그것에 집중하는 것일지도 모른다.
