❶ Seeing geography as a decisive factor in the course of human history can be construed as a bleak view of the world, which is why it is disliked in some intellectual circles.

❷ It suggests that nature is more powerful than man and that we can go only so far in determining our own fate.

❸ However, other factors clearly have an influence on events, too.

❹ Any sensible person can see that technology is now bending the iron rules of geography.

❺ It has found ways over, under, or through some of the barriers.

❻ The Americans can now fly a plane all the way from Missouri to Mosul on a bombing mission without needing to land to refuel.

❼ That, along with their great aircraft carrier battle groups, means they no longer absolutely have to have an ally or a colony in order to extend their global reach around the world.

❽ Of course, if they do have an air base on the island of Diego Garcia, or permanent access to the port in Bahrain, then they have more options; but it is less essential.

 

 

 

 

 

[ 지리적 한계를 극복한 기술의 발전 ]

 

❶ 지리를 인류 역사 과정에서 결정적인 요소로 보는 것은 암울한 세계관으로 이해될 수 있기 때문에 일부 지식인 집단은 그것을 싫어한다.

❷ 그것은 자연이 인간보다 더 강력하며 우리는 우리 자신의 운명을 결정하는데 한계가 있을 수 있다는 것을 시사한다.

❹ 상식적인 사람이라면 누구나 기술이 현재 지리의 철칙을 바꾸고 있다는 것을 알 수 있다.

❻ 이제 미국인들은 폭격 임무에서 Missouri에서 Mosul까지 연료를 재급유하기 위해 착륙할 필요없이 비행할 수 있다. 

❼ 그것은 그들의 거대한 항공 모함 전투 단과 더불어 그들이 전 세계로 세력을 확장하기 위해 더 이상 동맹국이나 식민지가 절대적으로 필요하지 않다는 것을 의미한다.

❽ 물론, 그들이 Diego Garcia 섬에 공군 기지나 Bahrain 항구에 영구적 접근권을 ‘실제로’ 가지고 있다면 더 많은 선택권이 있겠지만, 그것은 덜 필수적이다.
