The brain works to receive, process, and transform signals from everywhere, just like a city.

 

❶ Think of the brain as a city.

❷ If you were to look out over a city and ask “where is the economy located?” you’d see there’s no good answer to the question.

❸ Instead, the economy emerges from the interaction of all the elements ― from the stores and the banks to the merchants and the customers.

❹ And so it is with the brain’s operation: it doesn’t happen in one spot.

❺ Just as in a city, no neighborhood of the brain operates in isolation.  

❻ In brains and in cities, everything emerges from the interaction between residents, at all scales, locally and distantly. ❼ Just as trains bring materials and textiles into a city, which become processed into the economy, so the raw electrochemical signals from sensory organs are transported along superhighways of neurons.

❽ There the signals undergo processing and transformation into our conscious reality.

❶ 뇌를 도시라고 생각해보라.

❷ 만약 당신이 도시를 내다보며 “경제가 어디에 위치해 있나요?”라고 묻는다면 그 질문에 대한 좋은 답이 없다는 것을 알게 될 것이다.

❸ 대신, 경제는 상점과 은행에서 상인과 고객에 이르기까지 모든 요소의 상호 작용으로부터 나타난다.

❹ 그리고 그것은 뇌의 작동도 그러하다: 그것은 한 곳에서 일어나지 않는다.

❺ 도시에서처럼, 뇌의 어떤 지역도 독립적으로 작동하지 않는다.

❻ 뇌와 도시 안에서, 모든 것은, 모든 규모에서, 근거리에서든 원거리에서든, 거주자들 간의 상호 작용으로부터 나타난다.

❼ 기차가 자재와 직물을 도시로 들여오고, 그것이 경제 속으로 처리되는 것처럼, 감각 기관으로부터의 가공되지 않은 전기화학적 신호는 뉴런의 초고속도로를 따라서 전해진다.

❽ 거기서 신호는 처리와 우리의 의식적인 현실로 변형을 겪는다.
