    Painting the Landscape of Dreams

1.  René Magritte, a Belgian painter, understood one thing better than anyone else―that common, everyday objects can be painted in surprising ways.

2.  His paintings represent objects in great detail, but at the same time they differ from how we see reality.

3.  For example, look at the lady in the picture. Where is she riding? Is she in front, behind, or among the trees? The image feels real, but we cannot explain exactly what we see, just as if it were a dream. Magritte belonged to an art movement called Surrealism. Surrealist painters tried to capture the workings of the human unconscious through fantastic images. 

 We can think of art as a history of illusions. Looking at the world through art, we come to appreciate it from unexpected, surprising, and fresh perspectives.

1.   벨기에 화가 르네 마그리트는 일상적인 물체들을 놀라운 방식으로 그리는 법을 누구보다 잘 이해했습니다.

3.  예를 들어, 그림 속 여성을 보세요. 그녀는 어디로 타고 있는 걸까요? 나무 앞에 있을까요, 뒤에 있을까요, 아니면 나무들 사이에 있을까요?

4.  이미지는 현실처럼 느껴지지만, 우리가 정확히 무엇을 보고 있는지 설명할 수 없습니다. 마치 꿈처럼 말이죠.

5.   마그리트는 초현실주의라는 예술 운동에 속해 있었습니다.

6.   초현실주의 화가들은 환상적인 이미지를 통해 인간의 무의식을 포착하려고 노력했습니다.
