❶ A typical soap opera creates an abstract world, in which a highly complex web of relationships connects fictional characters that exist first only in the minds of the program’s creators and are then recreated in the minds of the viewer.

❷ If you were to think about how much human psychology, law, and even everyday physics the viewer must know in order to follow and speculate about the plot, you would discover it is considerable — at least as much as the knowledge required to follow and speculate about a piece of modern mathematics, and in most cases, much more.  

❸ Yet viewers follow soap operas with ease.

❹ How are they able to cope with such abstraction?

❺ Because, of course, the abstraction is built on an extremely familiar framework.

❻ The characters in a soap opera and the relationships between them are very much like the real people and relationships (that) we experience every day.   

❼ The abstraction of a soap opera is only a step removed from the real world.

❽ The mental “training” required to follow a soap opera is provided by our everyday lives.

❶ [ 복잡한 추상의 세계]  전형적인 드라마는 추상적인 세계를 만들어내며, 그 세계에서는 프로그램 제작자들의 마음속에만 먼저 존재하고 그러고 나서 시청자의 마음속에 재현되는 허구의 캐릭터들을 매우 복잡한 관계망이 연결한다.

❷ [ 많은 지식 필요해 ]  만약 줄거리를 따라가고 그것에 대해 추측하기 위해 시청자가 얼마나 많은 인간 심리학, 법, 그리고 심지어 일상에서의 물리학을 알아야 하는지에 대해 생각한다면, 여러분은 그것이 상당하다는 것을, 즉 적어도 현대 수학의 한 부분을 따라가고 그것에 대해 추측하는 데 필요한 지식만큼이라는 것, 그리고 대부분의 경우 훨씬 더 많다는 것을 발견할 것이다.

❸ [ 드라마 쉽게 이해 ]  하지만 시청자들은 드라마를 쉽게 따라간다.

❹ [ 어떻게 가능? ]  그들은 어떻게 그런 추상에 대처할 수 있을까?

❺ [ 익숙한 틀 ]  왜냐하면, 당연하게도, 그 추상은 매우 친숙한 틀 위에서 만들어졌기 때문이다.

❻ [ 현실과 비슷한 등장인물 ]  드라마 속 인물들과 그들 사이의 관계는 우리가 매일 경험하는 실제 사람들 및 관계와 매우 흡사하다.

❼ [ 현실과 한 걸음 차이 ]   드라마의 추상은 현실 세계에서 불과 한 걸음 떨어져 있다.

❽ [ 일상의 훈련 ]   드라마를 따라가기 위해 필요한 정신적 ‘훈련’은 우리의 일상에 의해 제공된다.
