Save Your SIM Cards and Hotspots

 Whether it’s for uploading status messages and selfies on social networks or for looking up the best restaurants, staying connected online is not an option but a must for many travelers these days.  However, finding an affordable way to get a reliable connection when traveling overseas can be very challenging.  So I buy a SIM card when I get to a foreign country.  At a reasonable price I can get the same connection speed as the locals. That’s not all.  Because countries all have different telecommunication companies, each SIM card is a unique souvenir of my trip to that country. What’s more, as SIM cards don’t take up luggage space, they’re very easy to take home. I have a collection of nine already, and it’s growing fast!   Another thing I collect might sound strange:  Wi-Fi hotspots. Whenever I’m in a place I want to remember, I purposely connect to the Wi-Fi.  Then, the hotspot name is automatically stored on my phone from that time on!  Occasionally I glance through the list of all the museums, resorts, restaurants, and other places I’ve visited in my travels.  Although I can’t connect to these hotspots when I get home, just catching a glimpse of one of their names on the list makes me excited.  All the memories from that place come flooding into my mind, and I can remember exactly what it was like to be, for example, at that peaceful terrace near the shore in Bali. For a moment, it’s almost like I’m actually there!

요즘 많은 여행자들에게 온라인으로 상태 메시지와 셀카를 소셜 네트워크에 올리거나, 맛집을 찾아보는 것은 선택이 아닌 필수입니다. 하지만 해외에서 신뢰할 수 있는 연결을 저렴하게 찾는 것은 매우 어려울 수 있습니다. 그래서 저는 외국에 도착하면 SIM 카드를 구입합니다. 합리적인 가격에 현지인들과 같은 속도로 인터넷을 사용할 수 있거든요. 그뿐만이 아닙니다. 각 나라마다 통신사가 다르기 때문에, 각 SIM 카드는 그 나라 여행의 독특한 기념품이 됩니다. 또한 SIM 카드는 짐 공간을 차지하지 않아서 집으로 가져가기도 매우 쉽습니다. 저는 이미 9개의 SIM 카드를 모았고, 그 수는 빠르게 늘어나고 있습니다! 또 하나 제가 모으는 것이 있는데, 조금 이상하게 들릴 수도 있지만, 바로 Wi-Fi 핫스팟입니다. 기억하고 싶은 장소에 있을 때마다, 저는 일부러 그곳의 Wi-Fi에 연결합니다. 그러면 그 핫스팟 이름이 제 전화에 자동으로 저장됩니다! 가끔 저는 여행 중에 방문했던 모든 박물관, 리조트, 레스토랑 등의 목록을 훑어봅니다. 집에서는 이 핫스팟들에 연결할 수 없지만, 목록에서 그 이름들을 보는 것만으로도 흥분됩니다. 그 장소에서의 모든 기억이 떠오르며, 예를 들어 발리 해변 근처 평화로운 테라스에 있었던 순간이 정확하게 떠오릅니다. 잠시 동안은 마치 그곳에 실제로 있는 것 같은 기분이 듭니다!
