  One of the best things that travel gives us is the memories of the places we've visited and the special experiences we had there. In order to hold on to these precious memories, we often bring home souvenirs. These souvenirs tend to be objects like postcards, fridge magnets, and key chains. However, a souvenir doesn't have to be something purchased in a gift shop. In fact, the word souvenir means "memory" in French, so whatever brings back memories could be called a "souvenir." Then what can we keep as souvenirs to preserve our travel memories other than ordinary gift shop products? Let's look into what other travelers do to make their travel memories last longer.

Make a Plate with Your Travel Maps                                                                                                                                               Matthew (24, UK)

Buying souvenirs and taking photos can be good ways to remember a trip, but most of the time I would store these things somewhere and hardly ever look at them, and thus they would be slowly forgotten. So I came up with my own method of preserving memories in a more interesting and visible way.  I started doing this two years ago when I got an opportunity to travel around Europe with one of my best friends. It was a spontaneous trip, so we relied mainly on paper maps from hostels or tourist information offices. Every day, we planned our route and sightseeing stops on those maps. When I returned home, I realized I had accumulated lots of these maps, and suddenly I thought I could make a souvenir out of them. I began by cutting out some landmarks from the map that showed the best parts of our trip, such as the Eiffel Tower, St. Peter’s Basilica, and the Colosseum. Then I got an ordinary plate and pasted the map pieces onto it using special glue. Finally, I put a layer of sealant over the whole plate so that the paper wouldn’t fade or wear out over time. The result is a wonderful decoration that I can look at every day. It is also a terrific reminder of every place I visited.

기념품을 사거나 사진을 찍는 것은 여행을 기억하는 좋은 방법일 수 있지만, 대부분 이런 것들을 어딘가에 보관해두고 잘 보지 않게 되어 결국 점점 잊혀지곤 했습니다. 그래서 저는 더 흥미롭고 눈에 잘 띄는 방식으로 기억을 간직하는 방법을 생각해냈습니다. 2년 전, 저는 가장 친한 친구 중 한 명과 유럽을 여행할 기회를 얻었을 때 이 방법을 시작했습니다. 즉흥적인 여행이었기 때문에 주로 호스텔이나 관광 안내소에서 받은 종이 지도를 사용해 매일 여행 경로와 관광지를 계획했습니다. 집으로 돌아왔을 때, 저는 이 지도들을 많이 모았다는 것을 깨달았고, 이 지도로 기념품을 만들 수 있겠다는 생각이 들었습니다. 여행 중 방문한 최고의 장소들을 나타내는 지도의 랜드마크들을 잘라내기 시작했습니다. 예를 들어, 에펠탑, 성 베드로 대성당, 콜로세움 같은 것들이요. 그런 다음, 평범한 접시에 지도 조각들을 특수 접착제를 사용해 붙였습니다. 마지막으로, 종이가 시간이 지나도 흐려지거나 닳지 않도록 접시 전체에 코팅제를 발랐습니다. 그 결과, 매일 볼 수 있는 멋진 장식품이 완성되었습니다. 또한, 제가 방문했던 모든 장소를 떠올리게 해주는 훌륭한 기념품이 되었습니다.
