❶ It is a common assumption that most vagrant birds are ultimately doomed, aside from the rare cases where individuals are able to reorientate and return to their normal ranges.

❷ In turn, it is also commonly assumed that vagrancy itself is a relatively unimportant biological phenomenon.

❸ This is undoubtedly true for the majority of cases, as the most likely outcome of any given vagrancy event is that the individual will fail to find enough resources, and/or be exposed to inhospitable environmental conditions, and perish. 

❹ However, there are many lines of evidence to suggest that vagrancy can, on rare occasions, dramatically alter the fate of populations, species or even whole ecosystems.

❺ Despite being infrequent, these events can be extremely important when viewed at the timescales over which ecological and evolutionary processes unfold.

❻ The most profound consequences of vagrancy relate to the establishment of new breeding sites, new migration routes and wintering locations.

❼ Each of these can occur through different mechanisms, and at different frequencies, and they each have their own unique importance. 

 

 

 

 

❶ [길 잃은 새의 죽음]  무리에서 떨어져 헤매는 대부분의 새들은 방향을 다시 잡고 그들의 일반적인 (서식) 범위로 돌아갈 수 있는 드문 경우의 개체들을 제외하고, 궁극적으로 죽을 운명이라는 것이 일반적인 가정이다.

❷ [떨어져 헤맴, 별로 중요하지 않은 현상]  결국, 무리에서 떨어져 헤매는 것 자체가 비교적 중요하지 않은 생물학적 현상이라고 일반적으로 여겨지기도 한다.

❸  [자원 부족과 죽음]     이것은 의심할 여지 없이 대부분의 경우에 사실인데, 무리에서 떨어져 헤매는 어떤 경우든 가장 가능성 있는 결과는 개체가 충분한 자원을 찾지 못하고/못하거나, 살기 힘든 환경 조건에 노출되어 죽기 때문이다.

❹ [ 떨어져 헤맴, 드물게 생태계에 영향 ]   하지만, 드문 경우에, 무리에서 떨어져 헤매는 것이 개체 수, 종, 심지어 생태계 전체의 운명을 극적으로 바꿀 수 있다는 것을 시사하는 많은 증거가 있다.

❺ [ 시간적 관점에서의 중요함]  드물기는 하지만, 이러한 경우들은 생태학적이고 진화적인 과정이 진행되는 시간의 관점에서 볼 때 매우 중요할 수 있다.

❻ [ 새로운 서식지 형성]   무리에서 떨어져 헤매는 것의 가장 중대한 결과는 새로운 번식지, 새로운 이동 경로 및 월동 장소의 확보와 관련이 있다.

❼ [ 각각 다르게, 고유한 중요성 ] 이들 각각은 서로 다른 메커니즘을 통해, 서로 다른 빈도로 발생할 수 있으며, 각각 고유한 중요성을 가지고 있다.
