❶  The fast-­growing, tremendous amount of data, collected and stored in large and numerous data repositories, has far exceeded our human ability for understanding without powerful tools.

❷ As a result, data collected in large data repositories become “data tombs” — data archives that are hardly visited.

❸ Important decisions are often made based not on the information–rich data stored in data repositories but rather on a decision maker’s instinct, simply because the decision maker does not have the tools to extract the valuable knowledge hidden in the vast amounts of data.

❹ Efforts have been made to develop expert system and knowledge­based technologies, which typically rely on users or domain experts to manually input knowledge into knowledge bases.                  

❺ However, this procedure is likely to cause biases and errors and is extremely costly and time consuming.  

❻ The widening gap between data and information calls for the systematic development of tools that can turn data tombs into “golden nuggets” of knowledge.

➔ ❼ As the vast amounts of data stored in repositories  overwhelm human understanding, effective tools to obtain valuable knowledge are required for better decision­-making.

 

 

 

 

❶ [ 데이터는 인간 이해 능력을 초과함 ]   빠르게 증가하는 엄청난 양의 데이터는, 크고 많은 데이터 저장소에 수집되고 저장되어, 우리 인간이 효과적인 도구 없이는 이해할 수 있는 능력을 훨씬 뛰어넘었다.

❷ [ 데이터 무덤 ]  결과적으로, 대규모 데이터 저장소에서 수집된 데이터는 ‘데이터 무덤’, 즉 찾는 사람이 거의 없는 데이터 보관소가 된다.

❸ [ 직관에 의존한 의사 결정 ]   중요한 의사 결정이 종종 데이터 저장소에 저장된 정보가 풍부한 데이터가 아닌 의사 결정자의 직관에 기반하여 내려지기도 하는데, 이는 단지 의사 결정자가 방대한 양의 데이터에 숨겨진 가치 있는 지식을 추출할 수 있는 도구를 가지고 있지 않기 때문이다.

❹ [ 지식 기반 기술 개발 노력 ]   전문가 시스템과 지식 기반 기술을 개발하려는 노력이 있어 왔는데, 이는 일반적으로 사용자나 분야(별) 전문가가 지식을 ‘수동으로’ 지식 기반에 입력하는 것에 의존한다.

❺ [ 편견과 오류, 높은 비용과 시간 ]  이 방법은 편견과 오류를 일으키기 쉽고 비용과 시간이 엄청나게 든다.

❻ [ 데이터를 금괴로 바꿀 도구 필요 ]  점점 더 벌어지는 데이터와 정보 간의 격차로 인해 데이터 무덤을 지식의 ‘금괴’로 바꿀 수 있는 도구의 체계적인 개발이 요구된다.
