# Language Serves Many Uses, But Aims at Cooperation

 

❶  You may have noticed that language has a variety of actual and potential uses.

❷ Marvel for just a moment at the flexibility, utility, and power of language as a set of tools.

❸ Language can be used to describe the world or some part of it, pose problems, suggest solutions, issue orders, make agreements, tell stories, tell jokes, sing songs, exchange greetings, buy things, sell things, make friends, insult enemies, and so on.

❹ Can language be said to serve any specific single, essential function amid all this variety?

❺ Remember that humans are social animals.

❻ Our chances of survival and of flourishing are greatly enhanced by association with others of our kind.

❼ We do much better in groups than as individuals.

❽ This places a high premium on cooperation and coordination with others.

❾ Thus the essential function, as well as the functional essence, of language would seem to be communication.

➓ What exactly is communication?

⓫ Communication is what we do to achieve common understanding ─ essential to cooperation and coordination ─ among two or more sentient beings.

 

 

 

 

# 언어, 다양한 용도 속 본질은 협력 소통

 

❶ 여러분은 언어가 다양한 실제적이고 잠재적인 용도를 지니고 있다는 것을 눈치챘을 수도 있다.

❷ 일단의 도구로서 언어의 유연성, 유용성, 힘에 잠시 감탄해 보라.

❸ 언어는 세상이나 그 일부를 묘사하고, 문제를 제기하고, 해결책을 제시하고, 명령을 내리고, 합의를 이루고, 이야기를 하고, 농담하고, 노래를 부르고, 인사를 나누고, 물건을 사고, 물건을 팔고, 친구를 사귀고, 적을 모욕하는 등에 사용될 수 있다.

❹ 이러한 모든 다양성 속에서 언어가 어떤 특정한 '하나의 본질적인' 기능을 수행한다고 말할 수 있을까?

❺ 인간은 사회적 동물이라는 것을 기억하라.

❻ 우리의 생존과 번영 가능성은 같은 종의 다른 사람들과의 유대를 통해 크게 향상된다.

❼ 우리는 개인으로서보다는 집단으로 훨씬 더 잘한다.

❽ 이는 '다른 사람과의 협력'과 '(다른 사람과의) 조정'을 매우 장려한다.

❾ 따라서 언어의 기능적 본질뿐만 아니라 본질적 기능은 의사소통인 것처럼 보일 것이다.

➓ 의사소통이란 정확히 무엇인가?

⓫ 의사소통이란 두 명 이상의 지각 능력이 있는 존재들 사이에서 협력과 조정에 필수적인 공동의 이해를 달성하기 위해 우리가 하는 것이다.
