❶ Words like ‘near’ and ‘far’ can mean different things depending on where you are and what you are doing.

❷ If you were at a zoo, then you might say you are ‘near’ an animal if you could reach out and touch it through the bars of its cage.

❸ Here the word ‘near’ means an arm’s length away.

❹ If you were telling someone how to get to your local shop, you might call it ‘near’ if it was a five­minute walk away.

❺ Now the word ‘near’ means much longer than an arm’s length away.  

❻  Words like ‘near’, ‘far’, ‘small’, ‘big’, ‘hot’, and ‘cold’ all mean different things to different people at different times.

❶ ‘near’과 ‘far’같은 단어들은 여러분이 어디에 있는지와 무엇을 하는지에 따라 여러 가지를 의미할 수 있다.

❷ 만약 여러분이 동물원에 있고, 동물 우리의 창살 사이로 손을 뻗어 동물을 만질 수 있다면 여러분은 그 동물이 ‘가까이’에 있다고 말할지도 모른다.

❸ 여기서 ‘near’이라는 단어는 팔 하나 만큼의 길이를 의미한다.

❹ 여러분이 누군가에게 동네 가게에 가는 방법을 말해주고 있다면, 만약 그 거리가 걸어서 5분 거리라면 그것을 ‘가까이’라고 말할 수도 있을 것이다.
