❶    Starting from birth, babies are immediately attracted to faces.

 

 

❷   Scientists were able to show this by having babies look at two simple images, one that looks more like a face than the other.

 

❸   By measuring where the babies looked, scientists found that the babies looked at the face-­like image more than they looked at the non-­face image.

 

 

❹   Even though babies have poor eyesight, they prefer to look at faces.            But why?

 

❺    One reason babies might like faces is because of something called evolution.

 

❻    Evolution involves changes to the structures of an organism (such as the brain) that occur over many generations. 

 

❼     These changes help the organisms to survive, making them alert to enemies.

 

❽    By being able to recognize faces from afar or in the dark, humans were able to know someone was coming and protect themselves from possible danger.

태어나면서부터, 아기는 즉각적으로 사람 얼굴에 끌린다. 

과학자들은 아기에게 간단한 두 개의 이미지― 하나는 다른 것에 비해 더 사람 얼굴처럼 보이는 이미지―를 보여줌으로써 이것을 보여줄 수 있었다. 

과학자들은 아기가 바라보는 곳을 유심히 살펴보면서, 아기가 얼굴처럼 보이지 않는 이미지보다는 얼굴처럼 보이는 이미지를 더 바라본다는 것을 발견하게 되었다. 

아기는 시력이 좋지 않음에도 불구하고 얼굴을 보는 것을 더 좋아한다. 왜그럴까?

아기가 얼굴을 좋아하는 것 같은 하나의 이유는 진화라고 불리는 것 때문이다. 

진화는 여러 세대를 거쳐 발생하는 유기체 구조(뇌와 같은 것)의 변화를 수반한다.

이런 변화들은 적들을 경계하게 해서 유기체가 생존하도록 도와준다. 

멀리서 또는 어둠 속에서 얼굴을 알아볼 수 있음으로써, 인간은누군가가 다가오는지 알 수 있었고 있을 법한 위험으로부터 자신을 보호할 수 있었다.
