[ What I Learned Through Empathy ]

❶ Christopher Wakling’s What I Did is narrated by a six-year-old boy.

❷ The story opens with the boy sitting on the stairs at home, shoes in his hands, while his father shouts at him for taking so long to come down because they are on their way out to the park.

❸ What we discover, by being immersed inside the boy’s head, is that he is taking his time not to annoy his father but because he is in the process of conducting an intricate scientific experiment about how friction operates to prevent his backside from sliding down the stairs.

❹ It made me laugh, but it also gave me an insight into my own four-year-old son.

❺ I suddenly understood that many of his infuriating habits—such as pouring his drinks from one glass into another and back again, often making a huge mess—could well be similar experiments that I should probably encourage rather than quash.

❻ The novel helped me recognize that I was not making enough effort to discover what was going on in his mind.

[  공감을 통해 알게 된 것 ]

❶ Christopher Wakling의 ‘내가 한 일’은 화자가 여섯 살 소년이다.

❷ 그 소설은 그 소년이, 그들이 공원에 가려고 나서는 길이었기 때문에 내려오는데 늦장을 부린다고 그의 아버지가 그에게 소리를 지르는 동안,  손에 신발을 들고 집의 계단에 앉아 있는 장면에서 시작한다.

❸ 그 소년의 머릿속에 몰입함으로써 우리가 발견하는 것은, 그가 아버지를 짜증나게 하려는 것이 아니라, 마찰력이 어떻게 작용하여 자기 엉덩이가 계단을 미끄러지며 내려가는 것을 막는지에 관한 복잡한 과학 실험을 하는 중이었기 때문에 꾸물대고 있다는 것이다.

❹ 그것이 나를 웃게 만들었지만, 그것은 또한 네 살짜리 아들에 대한 통찰력을 나에게 주었다.

❺ 화나게 만드는 그의 많은 습관들, 이를테면 음료를 한 컵에서 다른 컵으로 따랐다가 다시 원래 컵으로 따르느라 흔히 크게 어질러놓는 것 따위가, 어쩌면 내가 억누르기보다는 권장해야 하는, 그와 비슷한 실험일 수도 있겠다는 것을 나는 갑자기 이해했다.

❻ 그 소설은 내가 그의 머릿속에서 무슨 일이 진행 중인지 알아내려는 노력을 충분히 하지 않고 있다는 것을 깨닫도록 도와주었다.
