[ Say out loud the good things about the family you're watching ]

❶ Too often we notice that a sister, brother, parent, or child is particularly good at showing empathy, is exceedingly honest, is extremely fair, or shows a great deal of integrity, but we don’t mention what we are observing out loud.

❷ You may have noticed that your children seem far more comfortable with being sarcastic or insulting one another.

❸ Giving compliments often feels more awkward than offering “constructive criticism.”

❹ However, when we share the good that we see, we let our children or our partner know that we have recognized their strengths.

❺ Also, by acknowledging that each person brings different strengths to the family unit, we can learn from one another and work as a team.

[ 보고 있는 가족의 장점을 소리내어 말해주기 ]

❶ 너무나 자주 우리는 누이, 오빠, 부모님, 또는 자녀가 특히 공감을 잘 보여 주거나, 대단히 정직하거나, 몹시 공정하거나, 많은 성실성을 보여 준다는 것을 발견하지만, 우리가 보고 있는 것을 소리내어 언급하지 않는다.

❷ 여러분의 자녀가 서로를 비꼬아 말하거나 모욕을 주는 것을 훨씬 더 편하게 생각하는 것 같다는 것을 알아차렸을 수도 있다.

❸ 칭찬을 하는 것은 종종 ‘건설적인 비판’을 하는 것보다 더 어색하게 느껴질 수도 있다.

❹ 하지만, 우리가 보는 장점을 이야기할 때 우리는 우리의 자녀나 배우자가 우리가 그들의 장점을 인정했다는 것을 알게 해 준다.

❺ 또한, 각자가 가족 단위에 다른 장점을 가져다준다는 것을 인정함으로써, 우리는 서로에게서 배우고 팀으로 일할 수 있다.
