❶ Over the centuries various writers and thinkers, looking at humans from an outside perspective, have been struck by the theatrical quality of social life.

❷ The most famous quote expressing this comes from Shakespeare: “All the world’s a stage, / And all the men and women merely players; / They have their exits and their entrances, / And one man in his time plays many parts.”

❸ If the theater and actors were traditionally represented by the image of masks, writers such as Shakespeare are implying that all of us are constantly wearing masks.

❹ Some people are better actors than others.

❺ Evil types such as Iago in the play Othello are able to conceal their hostile intentions behind a friendly smile. ❻ Others are able to act with more confidence and bravado — they often become leaders.

❼ People with excellent acting skills can better navigate our complex social environments and get ahead.

# 인간은 주어진 사회적 맥락에 따라 우리의 행동을 조정하면서 살아간다.   

❶ 수 세기에 걸쳐 다양한 작가와 사상가들은 외부의 관점에서 인간들을 바라보며 사회적 삶의 연극적 속성과 마주해왔다.

❷ 이것을 표현하는 가장 유명한 명언은 셰익스피어에게서 비롯된다: “모든 세상은 연극무대이고, 모든 인간은 단지 배우일 뿐이다; 그들은 퇴장하고 입장한다, 그리고 일생동안 한 인간은 다양한 역할을 연기한다.”   

❸ 만약 연극과 배우들이 전통적으로 가면의 이미지에 의해 표현된다면, 셰익스피어와 같은 작가들은 우리 모두는 끊임없이 가면을 쓰고 있다는 것을 암시하고 있는 것이다.

❹ 어떤 사람들은 다른 사람보다 더 나은 배우이다.

❺ 연극 Othello(오셀로) 속 Iago(이아고) 와 같은 악역들은 그들의 적대적 의도를 친근한 미소 뒤에 숨길 수 있다.

❻ 다른 사람들은 더 큰 자신감과 허세를 가지고 연기를 할 수 있고 ― 그들은 주로 리더가 된다.

❼ 훌륭한 연기력을 가지고 있는 사람들은 우리의 복잡한 사회적 환경을 더 잘 헤쳐 나갈 수 있고 앞서갈 수 있다.
