❹    However, what seems to us to be standing out may very well be related to our goals, interests, expectations, past experiences, or current demands of the situation — “with a hammer in hand, everything looks like a nail.” 

 

❺   This quote highlights the phenomenon of selective perception. 

 

 

❻    If we want to use a hammer, then the world around us may begin to look as though it is full of nails!

우리는 사건을 선택적으로 해석하는 경향이 있다. 

만약 우리가 일이 “이렇게” 또는 “그렇게” 되기를 원한다면, 우리는 틀림없이 그러한 관점을 뒷받침하는 방식으로 증거를 선택하거나 쌓거나 배열할 수 있다. 

선택적인 지각은 우리에게 두드러져 보이는 것에 기반을 둔다. 

그러나 우리에게 두드러져 보이고 있는 것은 우리의 목표, 관심사, 기대, 과거의 경험 또는 상황에 대한 현재의 요구와 매우 관련 있을지도 모른다

―“망치를 손에 들고 있으면, 모든 것은 못처럼 보인다.” 

이 인용문은 선택적 지각의 현상을 강조한다. 만약 우리가 망치를 사용하기를 원하면, 우리 주변의 세상은 못으로 가득찬 것처럼 보이기 시작할지도 모른다!
