❶ Satyamurti was a leading nationalist in India.

❷ He was known for his great speech.

❸ His words carried logic and reason, wit and wisdom.

❹ So he usually got the better of others in arguments.

❺ Once he went to England to present India’s case for freedom.

❻ He met the leading politicians in Britain.

❼ He pleaded with them to restore self-government to India.

❽ At one meeting, while he was presenting India’s case for freedom, a heckler asked, “Do you know that the sun never sets on the British Empire?”

❾ That was true.

❿ For Britain had colonies all around the globe.

⓫ And always it was day in some or the other part of the Empire.

⓬ Satyamurti looked in the general direction of the crowd from where the question had come and smiled. 

⓭ The heckler felt he had nettled Satyamurti.

⓮ He thought Satyamurti would not have a convincing reply.

⓯ Here he went wrong.

⓰ For Satyamurti replied, “Do you know why?   Even the sun doesn’t trust the British in the dark.” 

 

 

 

 

❶ Satyamurti는 인도의 지도적인 민족주의자였다.

❷ 그는 훌륭한 연설로 유명했다. 
❸ 그의 말은 논리와 이성, 위트와 지혜를 지니고 있었다.

❹ 그래서 그는 대개 논쟁에서 다른 사람들을 이겼다. 

❺ 언젠가 그는 인도의 자유에 대한 주장을 발표하기 위해 잉글랜드에 갔다.          

❻ 그는 영국의 지도적인 정치가들을 만났다. ❼ 그는 인도에 자치 정부를 재건해 주도록 그들에게 간청했다.

❽ 어느 모임에서 그가 자유에 대한 인도의 주장을 발표하고 있는 도중에, 어떤 야유꾼이 “대영 제국 위에서는 해가 절대 지지 않는다는 것을 아시나요?”라고 물었다. 

❾ 그것은 사실이었다.

❿ 영국은 전 세계적으로 식민지를 가지고 있었기 때문이었다.    

⓫ 그리고 항상 대영 제국의 어떤 지역이나 다른 지역에서는 낮이었다.

⓬ Satyamurti는 질문이 들려왔던 군중들의 대략적인 방향 쪽으로 눈길을 돌리며 미소를 지었다. 

⓭ 그 야유꾼은 Satyamurti를 초조하게 했다고 생각했다.

⓮ 그는 Satyamurti가 설득력 있는 답변을 하지 못할 것이라고 생각했다.

⓯ 이 점에서 그가 틀렸다.        

⓰ 왜냐하면 Satyamurti는 “왠지 아십니까? 어둠 속에서는 태양조차도 영국인을 믿지 못하기 때문이죠.”라고 답변했기 때문이다.
