[ The role of tone when speaking ]

 

❶ Imagine two students examining their grades on a math test.

❷ One student tries hard but rarely gets a grade higher than a “C.”

❸ The other is the top math student in the school; she always gets an “A.”

❹ On this particular test, however, both students receive a “B.”

❺ These students might use the same words in discussing their grades, but with a remarkably different tone.

❻ The first student would likely deliver the sentence “I got a ‘B’ on the math test” with some surprise and happiness in her voice.

❼ She would sound excited and hopeful.

❽ The second student’s tone would indicate that she was not happy and suggest disappointment or worry.

❾ Both students used the same words, but they did not mean the same thing.

❿ The different tones mark the differences in the students’ feelings.

 

 

➔ ⓫ People may use the same sentence but convey different meanings due to their tone of voice displaying their emotional status.

 

 

 

 

[ 말할 때의 어조의 역할 ] 

 

❶ 두 학생이 자신의 수학 시험 성적을 살펴보고 있는 것을 상상해 보라.

❷ 한 학생은 열심히 노력하나 ‘C’보다 더 높은 성적을 받는 경우가 거의 없다.

❸ 다른 학생은 학교에서 수학이 1등이어서 항상 ‘A’를 받는다.

❹ 하지만 이 특정 시험에서 두 학생은 모두 ‘B’를 받는다.

❺ 아마도 이 학생들은 자신들의 성적에 대해 이야기를 할 때 같은 단어를 사용할지 모르지만 어조가 현저하게 다를 수 있다.

❻ 첫 번째 학생은 아마도 “나 수학 시험에서 ‘B’를 받았어.”라는 문장을 목소리에 상당한 놀라움과 행복감을 담아서 말할 것이다.

❼ 그녀의 목소리는 흥분되어 있고 희망에 차 있을 것이다.

❽ 두 번째 학생의 어조는 그녀가 행복하지 않다는 것을 나타내고 실망이나 걱정을 암시할 것이다.

❾ 두 학생은 모두 같은 단어를 사용했으나 같은 것을 의미하지 않았다.

❿ 서로 다른 어조가 학생들의 기분의 차이를 나타낸다. 

 

➔  ⓫ 사람들은 같은 문장을 사용할 수 있지만 그들의 감정 상태를 드러내는 목소리의 어조 때문에 다른 의미를 전달할 수 있다.
