[ The desire to maintain a complete self-image ]

 

❶ People have a need to maintain an image of self-integrity.   

❷ In an early demonstration of this, Steele (1975) threatened women’s self-images by telling them that, as members of their community, it was common knowledge that they either were cooperative with community projects, uncooperative with community projects, or not concerned about driving safely.

(❸ A fourth, control group received no information relevant to their self-images.)

❹ Two days later, a fellow researcher called each woman, asking her to list every food item in her kitchen to help a food cooperative.

❺ Women who had been told they were uncooperative people or careless drivers two days earlier helped the researcher almost twice as much as women in the other groups.

❻ Steele explains this effect in terms of the women’s motive to restore their self-concepts as cooperative people. 

 

 

➔ ❼ According to the above study, threats to people’s self-images induce a desire to reestablish their self-integrity.

❶ 사람들은 자기 완전성의 이미지를 유지하려는 욕구를 가지고 있다.

❷ 이에 대한 초기의 입증 연구에서, Steele(1975)은, 여성들이 지역 사회의 일원으로서, 지역 공동체의 사업에 협조적이거나, 비협조적이거나, 혹은 안전 운전에 관심이 없다는 것은 누구나 알고 있는 일이라고 말함으로써 그들의 자아상에 위협을 가했다.

(❸ 네 번째 통제 집단은 그들의 자아상과 관련된 어떤 정보도 받지 않았다.)

❹ 이틀 후, 동료 연구원이 여성들 각각에게 전화를 걸어 식품 협동조합을 돕기 위해 그들의 부엌에 있는 모든 식품의 목록을 작성해 달라고 부탁했다.

❺ 이틀 전 자신들이 비협조적이라거나 부주의한 운전자라고 들었던 여성들은 나머지 집단의 여성들보다 그 연구원을 거의 두 배 더 많이 도와주었다.

❻ Steele은, 협조적인 사람이라는 자신들의 자아 개념을 복구하려는 여성들의 동기의 관점에서 이 효과를 설명한다. 

 

➔  ❼ 위 연구에 의하면, 사람들의 자아상에 대한 위협은 그들 자아의 완전성을 재건하려는 욕구를 유발한다.
