❶  As the tenth anniversary of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, approached, 9/11-related media stories peaked in the days immediately surrounding the anniversary date and then dropped off rapidly in the weeks thereafter.

 

❷  Surveys conducted during those times asked citizens to choose two “especially important” events from the past seventy years.

 

❸  Two weeks prior to the anniversary, before the media blitz began, about 30 percent of respondents named 9/11. 

 

❹  But as the anniversary drew closer, and the media treatment intensified, survey respondents started identifying 9/11 in increasing numbers ― to a high of 65 percent.

 

❺  Two weeks later, though, after reportage had decreased to earlier levels, once again only about 30 percent of the participants placed it among their two especially important events of the past seventy years. 

 

❻  Clearly, the amount of news coverage can make a big difference in the perceived significance of an issue among observers as they are exposed to the coverage. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

❶  [ 9/11 테러 10주년 기념 보도 ]   2001년 9월 11일 테러리스트 공격의 10주년 추모일이 다가오면서, 9/11 관련 언론 기사의 양이 추모일 바로 전후로 최고조까지 올라갔고,그 후 몇주동안 급격히 줄어들었다.

❷  [ 설문조사 : 중요한 사건 선택 ]   그 시기동안 실시된 조사는 시민들에게 지난 70년동안 있었던 ‘특히 중요한’ 두 가지 사건을 선택하도록 요청했다.

❸  [ 추모일 2주 전, 미디어 대선전 시작 전 ]   미디어 대선전이 시작되기 전인 추모일 2주 전, 응답자의 약 30퍼센트가 9/11을 언급했다. 

❹  [ 추모일 근접, 미디어 보도 증가 ]   그러나 추모일이 더 가까워지고, 미디어 보도가 증가함에 따라, 더 많은 응답자들이 9/11 을 선택하기 시작했고, 그 수가 65퍼센트까지 올랐다.

❺  [ 추모일 2주 후, 미디어 보도 감소  ]   그러나 보도가 2주 후에 이전 수준으로 줄어들자, 다시 한 번 참가자의 약 30퍼센트만이 그것을 지난 70년 동안의 특히 중요한 두가지 사건으로 선택했다. 

❻  [ 사건의 중요성 인식, 미디어 보도의 영향 ]   명백하게, 뉴스 보도의 양은 그들이 그 보도에 노출될 때 관찰자들 사이에서 문제의 중요성을 ‘인식하는’데 있어 큰 차이를 만들 수 있다.
