❶  A woman named Rhonda who attended the University of California at Berkeley had a problem.

 

❷   She was living near campus with several other people―none of whom knew one another.

 

❸   When the cleaning people came each weekend, they left several rolls of toilet paper in each of the two bathrooms.

 

❹     However, by Monday all the toilet paper would be gone.

 

❺    It was a classic tragedy-­of-­the­-commons situation: because some people took more toilet paper than their fair share, the public resource was destroyed for everyone else.

 

❻    After reading a research paper about behavior change, Rhonda put a note in one of the bathrooms asking people not to remove the toilet paper, as it was a shared item.

 

❼   To her great satisfaction, one roll reappeared in a few hours, and another the next day.

 

❽   In the other note-­free bathroom, however, there was no toilet paper until the following weekend, when the cleaning people returned.

 

 

❾ ➔ A small reminder brought about a change in the behavior of the people who had taken more of the shared goods than they needed.

Berkeley에 있는 California대학에 다니는 Rhonda라 는 여자는 한 가지 문제 상황이 있었다. 

그녀는 여러 사람들과 함께 캠퍼스 근처에 살고 있었는데, 그들 중 누구도 서로를 알지는 못했다.

청소부가 주말 마다 왔을 때 화장실 두 칸 각각 몇 개의 두루마리 화장지를 두고 갔다.  

그러나 월요일 즈음 모든 화장지가 없어지곤 했다.

그것은 전형적인 공유지의 비극 상황이었다. 

일부 사람들이 자신들이 사용할 수 있는 몫보다 더  많은 휴지를 가져갔기 때문에,  그 외 모두를 위한 공공재가 파괴됐다. 

행동 변화에 대한 한 연구논문을 읽고 나서, Rhonda는 화장실 화장지는 공유재이므로 사람들에게 가져가지 말라는 쪽지를 화장실 한 곳에 두었다. 

아주 만족스럽게도, 몇 시간 후에 화장지 한 개가 다시 나타났고, 그 다음날에는 또 하나가 다시 나타났다.

하지만 쪽지가 없는 화장실에서는 청소부가 돌아오는 그 다음 주말까지 화장지가 없었다.
