[ The price to pay for Global Warming ]

 

❶ It is sometimes said, these days, that while “global warming” is a threat to most peoples and societies on this planet, there will be winners as well as losers.

❷ The winners might include those living in high, cold regions where warmth will shorten winters and brighten summers.

❸ Russia, in particular, might see gains from global warming: the decline of Arctic ice would open submarine energy reserves to exploitation, would free ice-bound ports for navigation, and would soften the harsh environments of Siberia.

❹ But Russia’s hopes were damaged by what happened in 2010, when forest fires during searing summer heat destroyed whole villages, killed more than 50 people, left thousands homeless and enveloped the capital, Moscow, in a poisonous smog.

❺ Climate change, short- or long-range, rarely comes without a price tag.

[ 온난화로 치뤄야 할 대가 ]

❶ 요즘 가끔씩, ‘지구 온난화’가 이 지구상에 있는 대부분의 민족과 사회에 위협이 되기는 하지만, 패자뿐만 아니라 승자도 있을 것이라고들 한다.

❷ 승자에는 따뜻한 날씨가 겨울을 줄이고 여름에 활기를 줄 고위도의 추운 지방에 사는 사람들이 포함될 수도 있을 것이다.

❸ 특히 러시아는 지구 온난화로부터 이익을 볼 수도 있겠는데, 북극 얼음이 감소하면 바다 속 비축 에너지를 채굴할 수 있게 될 터이고, 항해할 수 있도록 얼음에 갇힌 항구가 해방될 것이며, 시베리아의 혹독한 환경이 누그러질 것이다.

❹ 하지만 러시아의 희망은 2010년 발생한 사건에 의해 훼손되었는데, 그때 타는 듯한 여름의 더위가 지속되는 동안의 산불이 모든 마을 들을 파괴하고 50명이 넘는 사람 들을 사망케 했으며, 수천 명이 집을 잃게 하고, 수도 모스코바를 유독한 스모그로 뒤덮었다.

❺ 기후 변화가, 단기적이든 장기적이든, 가격표 없이 오는 경우는 거의 없다.
