➊ Luckily, John's role as chief engineer was succeeded by his son, Washington Roebling.

* the bends 잠함병, 잠수병, 케이슨병 (caisson[ diver’s ] disease ): 깊은 바닷속같이 높은 압력의 환경에 있다가 갑자기 보통 기압의 환경으로 되돌아올 때 일어나는 여러 가지 장애. 기압의 급격한 감소로 몸안에 녹아 있던 공기 중의 질소가 기포화하여 혈관, 뼈 등에 기포가 발생하여 일어난다.  관절통, 근육통, 피부 가려움, 호흡 곤란 등의 증상이 나타난다.

➊ 다행히도, 수석 엔지니어로서의 John의 역할을 그의 아들인 Washington Roebling(워싱톤 로블링)이 이어갔다. 

❷ 그는 아버지와 함께 다리들을 건설했었고 유럽에서 교량 건설을 공부했었기 때문에, 그는 John의 꿈을 믿었다.
