 The potential for small science to thrive 

❶ Technology allows research scientists to leverage tiny budgets in astonishing ways.

❷ And each of us can now easily contribute to science as an amateur, through the growing prevalence of citizen science,  in which the general public helps — often in a small, incremental way — in such tasks as data collection.

❸ From categorizing galaxies or plankton to figuring out how proteins fold, everyone can now be a part of the scientific process.

❹ And although mathematics might still be the domain of the singular genius, it, too, has a place for the hobbyist or amateur: In the mid-1990s, two high school students discovered a novel additional solution to a problem ⤺that Euclid posed and solved thousands of years ago and  ⤺for which no other method had been found since. 

❺ There’s even an entire domain ⤺known as recreational mathematics.

❻ What these examples demonstrate is that↝ creative experiments and the right questions are as important as ample funding and infrastructure — and that↝ technology is making this work easier than ever.

  작은 과학이 번창할 수 있는 가능성  

❶ 기술은 연구 과학자들이 아주 적은 예산을 놀라운 방법으로 이용할 수 있게 해 준다.

❷ 그리고 이제 우리는 각자 점점 널리 행해지는 시민 과학을 통해서 아마추어로서 과학에 쉽게 공헌할 수 있는데, 거기서 일반 대중은 자료 수집과 같은 작업에서 흔히 작은, 증가하는 방식으로 돕는다.

❸ 은하계나 플랑크톤을 분류하는 것에서부터 단백질이 어떻게 접히는지를 알아내는 것까지, 이제 모두가 과학 과정의 일부가 될 수 있다.

❹ 그리고 비록 수학이 여전히 뛰어난 천재의 영역일 수도 있지만, 거기에는 또한 취미 활동가나 아마추어가 설 자리가 있다. 1990년대 중반, 두 명의 고등학생이 유클리드가 수천 년 전에 제기하고 풀었으며 그 이후에 다른 (해결) 방법이 발견된 적이 없었던 문제에 대한 새로운 추가적인 해결 방법을 발견했다.

❺ 심지어 오락적인 수학이라고 알려진 전체 영역도 있다.
